PostHeaderIcon GRUB-2.0

The GRand Unified Bootloader, more commonly known as GRUB, is a staple of almost all current Linux distributions. LiLo, the Linux Loader, was the primary alternative (and is still in development) but GRUB, specifically the current GNU version, remains prominent. Unless you're old-school, GRUB 0.9x was probably your first glimpse of Linux. Well, progress never sleeps; GRUB has a new version out and there are some changes you need to be aware of.

It's easy to take networking for granted; just plug your PC into a modem or router (or, ahem, "find" your neighbor's wireless connection) and voila, instant Drunken-Facebooking. If you're old-school and remember a time before teh interwebs (think the acoustic-coupler modem), however, then you get excited about different ways to connect one computer to another. What's even cooler is stuff like tunneling, virtual private networks (VPNs), and encryption. Yes, really. Oh, shut up, you know it's cool.

It could have just as easily been called a corral, or a sandbox; but for some reason it's known as a jail.

PostHeaderIcon Okay, I'm back now...

Okay, so I've been gone a while.

The home automation project is temporarily on hold, becuase yours truly got unemployed, and can't afford even the cheap hardware required for that project. As the weeks have dragged on with no income, I got bored...

So, I decided to start mucking about with Perl. Why? Well, 'cause I can! It's free (If you have Linux, it's probably already installed on your machine, just do a "whereis perl" at the command line, and you'll get the path to Perl. Then do a "perl -v" and you'll get the version you have installed.)

PostHeaderIcon Home Automation Installment 1

This is the beginning of a new series written by yours truly for Windows Anonymous. The series is entitled "Home Automation", and believe it or not, it's about ... drum roll please ... Automating your home. Now, it may be possible to do this with a Windows based system, but I wouldn't have a clue how to begin thinking about that, so we'll do it in Linux.
