PostHeaderIcon At The Center Of It All

PostHeaderIcon Ubuntu vs. Everybody

This one.

This one.

And this one.

And this one.

And this one too.

The above comparisons are all from one site (Phoronix), and all from just the first page. They're all comparing Ubuntu to...something; occasionally even itself.

PostHeaderIcon Solaris bites the big one

Something had to give in Oracle's acquisition of Sun.

Granted, Oracle isn't in the open-source business (having co-opted Red Hat Enterprise Linux and rebadged it so they could say they had a *nix-based OS). And technically, Solaris--the *nix-based OS from Sun Microsystems--wasn't completely open-source in the first place; they held back some of the code for their enterprise clientele. In fact, Solaris never really had a chance in the desktop market in the first place.

Or did it?

PostHeaderIcon Why is Linux more secure?

While chris_k discovers that 1st-year IT schooling isn't as easy as he thought, and mike_k is out wherever he is writing a script to automate half the Gulf Coast on a machine running only a Pentium Pro and 32MB of RAM, I figured I'd take the opportunity to address a basic concept that a number of us have taken for granted: Why is Linux synonymous with security?

PostHeaderIcon Illegal immigration

I've mentioned it before, in these pages and elsewhere. There is a movement to port Linux apps, an entire desktop environment, and, indeed, the kernel itself, to Windows. Slowly. Insidiously.

PostHeaderIcon Let me tell you a story

In the grand scheme of things, Linux hasn't been around all that long. It's been around longer than most people know about since most people have only recently heard of it (and it certainly hasn't been a full-fledged desktop for all that long) but Windows, BSD, and the original Mac all predate it, and it is not, contrary to some, directly descended from UNIX.
